The Huntersville Ward Young Men play basketball. Very well. They won the Stake Championship and then got to play in the Regional Championship against 3 other stakes: South, Central, and Hickory. South Stake was rumored to be the toughest competition, and the games were all held on their home court at the South Stake Center on Carmel Road. Someone decided to schedule the first semifinal between Huntersville and South Stake at 7:30 am, which seemed to give South Stake yet another advantage. Nevertheless, the Huntersville Ward Young Men prevailed in a fairly close game and went on to the championship game.
We went down and watched the championship game in the afternoon. I seems like there must have been about 40 people from our ward there to support the guys. Here are some shots of the championship game. It was a special game. I have never seen such great sportsmanship between teams ever. H-Ward played Central Stake and won by 14 points (58-44), but they didn't let it go to their heads, and the best part of the game was watching these talented young men make sure everyone had a fair chance at the ball, both teams. Some of the parents from our ward were really touched that their boys all got a chance to play and to score. Even the Central Stake boys kind of helped everyone make a basket. We were so glad to be there to witness such a wonderful event.
YM - working it out (in blue and gray).
Calvin Fairbairn with the ball, getting ready to pass to his younger brother Max on the right. Kalyb Kemper is in yellow shorts with a grey T-shirt, and I think the other two guys on our team here are Jake Fairbairn (far side baseline) and Robert Forsberg (near side baseline).
Half-time - Coach Holder on top of everything (in the khaki shirt with his back to us). Others pictured, from left to right, Bishop Forsberg, Stephen Forsberg, Zach Howder, Calvin Fairbairn, Robert Forsberg, Kalyb Kemper (barely visible in yellow shorts behind Robert), Max Fairbairn, Jake Fairbairn.
Final Score. What a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
Congratulations to both teams!!!!!!!!!!!!
